THE REEDS AND THE GREAT OAK

THE GREAT OAK TREE LIVED ON THE BANKS OF A SLOW MOVING RIVER IN A BEAUTIFUL PART OF THE FOREST. THE LAND AROUND THE FOREST WAS FULL OF COLOUR AND LIFE WITH FLOWERS, PLANTS AND ANIMALS OF ALL KINDS AS FAR AS THE EYE COULD SEE. THE GREAT OAK COULD SEE FURTHER THAN ANY OTHER, HE TOWERED ABOVE THE OTHER TREES AND WITH HIS GREAT ROOTS SO STRONG AND POWERFUL THERE WAS NO ROOM FOR ANY OTHER PLANTS AROUND HIM ……

……ALL EXCEPT FOR A LITTLE BUNCH OF RIVER REEDS SWAYING SOFTLY IN THE BREEZE AT THE RIVERS EDGE.

EACH DAY THE GREAT OAK WOULD WAKE AND STRETCH UP HIS GREAT BRANCHES TOWARD THE SKY.“HOW STRONG I AM”, THE GREAT OAK WOULD EXCLAIM “LOOK AT MY MIGHTY ROOTS, MY GREAT TRUNK AND MY BRANCHES REACHING TOWARD THE SUN. SURELY THERE HAS NEVER BEEN A TREE SUCH AS I”

THE LITTLE REEDS WOULD TRY TO ANSWER HIM OR TO WISH HIM A GOOD DAY BUT THE OAK WAS TOO STRONG AND PROUD TO LISTEN TO SUCH AS THEM!

ONE EVENING AS THE SUN BEGAN TO SET OVER THE FOREST, THE WIND STARTED TO BLOW STRONGER. THE LITTLE REEDS BENT WITH THE WIND AS IT BLEW ACROSS THE RIVER BUT THE GREAT OAK STOOD STRONG AND PROUD REFUSING TO BOW TO SUCH A WEAK WIND.
AS THE EVENING WORE ON THE WIND GREW STRONGER AND STRONGER BENDING THE LITTLE REEDS SO THAT THEIR TOPS ALMOST TOUCHED THE WATER. THE GREAT OAK WOULD NOT BE BENT, “DO YOU THINK THAT ONE SUCH AS I WILL BEND IN THE WIND LIKE THE OTHER PLANTS? NOT I, FOR I AM THE GREAT OAK AND I AM STRONG”.

THE WIND HOWLED AS NIGHT WORE ON, GUSTING WITH SUCH FORCE THAT THE LITTLE NEEDS COULD BARELY HEAR THEMSELVES SHOUT. “BEND WITH THE WIND GREAT OAK, IT IS TOO STRONG EVEN FOR YOU!” THE GREAT OAK WOULD NOT LISTEN, HE WAS TOO PROUD OF HIS OWN STRENGTH TO GIVE IN TO THE WIND AND TOO FULL OF HIS OWN IMPORTANCE TO LISTEN TO THE REEDS.

THE NEXT MORNING THE REEDS WOKE TO A DEEP MOANING SOUND WHICH ECHOED THROUGH THE NOW WINDLESS FOREST. IT WAS THE GREAT OAK, LYING ON HIS SIDE NEXT TO THE REEDS. “HOW CAN THE WIND BREAK ONE SUCH AS I AND YET YOU THIN RIVER REEDS ARE STILL AS HEALTHY AS YOU WERE BEFORE THE STORM?” HE WAILED.

“O GREAT OAK”, THEY REPLIED “WE CHOSE NOT TO FIGHT THE WIND BUT TO FLOW WITH IT, WHILE YOU STOOD STRONG AND RIGID, YOU HAD NO FLEXIBILITY AND IN THE YOU BROKE IN TWO”

MORAL 1
NEVER BE TOO PROUD TO TAKE ADVICE FROM SOMEONE YOUNGER, SMALLER OR LESS EXPERIENCED THAN YOU. ALWAYS LEARN FROM OTHERS

MORAL 2
BEND WITH THE WIND. LET YOURSELF RELAX AND FLOW, DON’T BE TOO RIGID IN YOUR BODY OR IN YOUR MIND!
